Debra Bendis, senior editor and web editor, has been with the Century since 1994. A graduate of North Central College in Illinois and Northwestern University, she is co-editor of Living by the Word.
Jason Byassee studied at Davidson College and Duke University. He has been at the Christian Century since 2004. He has also served as an adjunct professor at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, North Park Theological Seminary, Wheaton College, and Northern Seminary. Both he and his wife, Jaylynn, are United Methodist ministers.
John Dart, news editor at the Century since 2000, was a religion news writer at the Los Angeles Times for 30 years. Dart was president of the Religion Newswriters Association in 1990-1992 and coauthored a study aimed at resolving religion-news media conflicts ("Bridging the Gap," 1993; updated in 2000). He is active in the Society of Biblical Literature and has written articles and books on New Testament research.
Contributing editor Dean Peerman is a 47-year veteran of the Century staff. Chiefly involved in copy editing and proofreading, he occasionally does writing of his own for the magazine. A graduate of Yale Divinity School, he is a longtime member of Lake Street Church (American Baptist) in Evanston, Illinois.
Richard A. Kauffman, book review editor, has been at the Century since 2002. He has graduate degrees from Eastern Baptist Theological Seminary, Princeton Theological Seminary, and Temple University. He has pastored Mennonite congregations and also been a theology instructor and seminary administrator.
